Wines

With the heat of the summer sun warming our foreheads and 95% humidity rolling in rivulets down our backs, nothing is more refreshing and revitalizing than brightly fruity, fresh and zippy wines, served chilled and consumed in generous gulps. We are big fans of these kind of wines (year-round) at The Thirteenth Street Wine Co., and happen to make several beauties. Please consider the following options:

Cuveé Thirteen Sparkling 2004
Chardonnay Musqué 2007
Sauvignon Blanc 2007
June's Vineyard Riesling 2006
Funk Vineyard Riesling 2006
Cabernet Rosé 2007
Erv's Blend 2006
Sandstone Estate Gamay 2006
Summer sun shines on our wines

Wines Currently Available at the Winery (and recent reviews) June 2008

WHITE
2007 Sauvignon Blanc ($18). Pale straw; clean nose of medium intensity with lemon & yellow grapefruit, wet stone and some subtle warm toast and leesy notes. Not overtly herbaceous 2007 Sauvignon Blancbut still vibrant and fresh.  Lovely immediate, juicy fruit with succulent acidity.  Very easy to drink this SB, which captures that fine line between zesty varietal character and juicy citrus and appley fruit.

2005 Chardonnay Reserve ($26).  Straw colour; spicy pineapple with well integrated oak; initial pineapple flavour gives way to caramel; rich, mouth-filling, concentrated, full-bodied with a toasty oak finish.  (Tony Aspler - 4 stars).

2007 Chardonnay Musqué ($18). A worthy successor to our very popular 2006 vintage.  Nose leaning towards peach aromas and lightly spiced, sautéed apple with notes of just baked buttery piecrust and some green fruits and beeswax behind.  Taut flavours and a nice, mid palate fullness.  Cool fermented in stainless steel (no barrel aging) to capture all of the fruit.  Long, rich finish.

2006 June's Vineyard Riesling ($17). Nice complexity. First thoughts are of applesauce, key lime and candied peel. Tastes of cooked pear, peach and pineapple with well integrated acidity and a medium plus finish.  (100% clone 49.)

2006 Funk Vineyard Riesling  ($24). A very complex nose with some wet clay, warmed stone fruit, lilac and lemon curd aromas.  Very rich and full.  Fleshy, mouth-filling Riesling with a gorgeous core of acidity off-setting the delicate residual sugar.  Long finish.  Will benefit from further bottle age.  (A blend of clones Weis B21 and GM322.)  (Wine Access Magazine - Score of 90; Tony Aspler - 4 stars)

2006 Et Ceteras White ($22 retail). A blend of vinifera grapes including Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, among others. Vibrant nose with pear, green apple, paraffin wax, lilac, musk and subtle herbaceous notes - crisp attack with succulent fruit that balances the zesty acidity. Lingering finish with some residual herbaceous flavors and delicate peppery notes.  Bronze Medal at the Canadian Wine Awards.

RED
2006 Gamay Estate2006 Sandstone Old Vines Gamay ($25).
Made from our best block of 25 year old vines.  Aged for 12 months in French Allier oak barrels, 1/3 of which were new, 1/3 of which were 1 year old, with the balance of same being 2 years old.  Darker fruits at the core of this award winning vintage. (Best in Ontario for the 5th year.)  Hints of cherry and blueberry with subtle wood spice and cocoa character. Sweet, lush core of a red stone fruit palate with balanced acidity and nice integration.   A noticeable step up in quality from our 2006 Gamay.  (Winner at the Ontario Wine Awards 2008.)

2006 Erv’s Blend ($16).  A unique blend of Syrah, Gamay, Merlot and Sangiovese grapes.  Medium dark ruby with attractive black pepper, spice and a ripe black fruit nose. Lots of fruit with a hint of fennel, Mediterranean herbs and mineral. Very quaffable with plenty of interesting character. Juicy and flavour-rich with a longish finish and lovely balanced acidity and alcohol. Not just for burgers to be sure, but certainly a wine made for rustic, simple yet flavourful foods, like summer stews, pizza and southern BBQ.

2006 Gamay Estate  ($18). Medium ruby with fine fruit.  Pure and bright with a nice core acidity.  Classic sour cherry, currant and herbal aromas.  Another winner that will gain weight and complexity with age.

2005 Meritage ($30).  Deep maroon core.  Roasted coffee bean with a really piercing core of dark almost liqueur fruit aromas.  Some briny tones with black licorice, tea leaf and violet.  A nice mix of fine tannin, bright acid and balanced oak flavours.  Very drinkable now, but certainly the best is yet to come. Second release of this wine.

2005 Et Ceteras Red ($22). Deeper ruby, purple colour.  Plum, cherry, dark chocolate, olive and raw beef with a hint of black cardamom and tomato.  Very fleshy super-ripe fruit flavours - darker berry.  Fine acidity and tannin add the necessary structure.

ROSÉ
2007 Cabernet Rosé ($16). A beautiful bright cranberry pink.  Medium plus intensity in the nose with fresh bell pepper, ripe soft red berry, a touch of spice with some anise layered behind.  Initially delivers a mouthful of ripe, sweet strawberry and candyfloss but refreshing acidity at the core and towards the finish keeps the luscious sweetness in check.  This wine will please the masses and should be a hit with the flavours of the summer.

2006 Cabernet Rosé ($17). Vinified from Cabernet Franc.Sparkling specialists Delicate yet bright salmon pink colour.  A nice mix of wild strawberry, red currant and herb with a touch of cocoa and anise.  Fruit tea flavors on a fresh yet fleshy palate.  Balanced rose suitable for shellfish and fish prepared simply or with tomato broth and fine herbs.

SPARKLING
2004 Cuvée Thirteen Sparkling Wine ($22).  This is the second vintage of our popular sparkler.  A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

2000 Blanc de Noir ($40). "....one of Thirteenth Street's best ever bubbles.  This elegant 100 percent Pinot Noir sparkling wine spent six years on the lees, gaining flavours that are otherworldly and grand.  It has layers of lemon/apple fruit and a refined finish that make it incredibly moreish." (Christopher Waters, Vines, November 2007. 4 1/2 stars)
